Recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my computer but was not going to be able to keep it plugged in to an Ethernet port. I have had trouble installing drivers on older versions of Ubuntu so I was very careful in selecting a WiFi adapter; finally settled on BrosTrend AC650. Boy was I NOT disappointed! Product works as described but the beauty of it was the installation instructions. They are carefully written with thoughtful anticipation for anything you might experience during installation. I patiently watched the software running on the Terminal and was happy to see it attempt workarounds during file retrieval to guarantee success. Very cool, thanks BrosTrend!
The BrosTrend 650Mbps Linux WiFi Adapter works very well once set up. After reading the description of the adapter, I believed that it would be a simple plug and play installation. However, the installation required that the computer had to be connected to the router by ethernet cable connection in order to download and install the Ubuntu drivers. As I was installing this computer away from the router this made the installation far more complicated than I was expecting.
I had to give Tech Support 2 stars and ease of installation 2 stars as well, but 5 stars to value for the money and for the device itself. I purchased this to give an old laptop running Linux a 5G WiFi connection. While it's been a few weeks/months since I purchased this and set it up, the biggest thing I remember was my inability to locate the right driver for the first 3-4 days after it arrived (I spent several evenings in the search). The device came with a mini-CD (not many CD drives can handle these). I wasted the first few days trying to find a driver online. Then I tried the mini-CD using another PC. I honestly no longer recall whether I was able to find something online or get the driver off the mini-CD. But, eventually, after a few days, I eventually resolved my issues and got the right driver installed after searching and experimenting. As a caution to those considering the device, make sure the Linux distro you are using is supported. I have multiple Linux distros on that particular laptop that I can boot up. Fortunately, the one I use the most often is supported, but one of them was not at the time I set this up.
This has worked well so far. For those using linux, it has a Realtek Rtl8821cu chipset. Worked out of the box for windows, but any linux distro will need drivers compiled with realtek. Customer service was great, and responded in 24h with instructions (which are also on their website) that added a script that did all the work compiling drivers for you. They even had their expert explain to me what systems it will work on and why.
Thats pretty good support for linux on a chipset that would otherwise require a much larger effort to use. For me, worked great in 2.4g and 5g on Raspberry Pi OS for the RPi2, and in access point mode, but be aware that this compilation script will not work on smaller systems like OpenWRT, as those require cross-compilation. Check their website for a list of officially supported operating systems.
BrosTrend 650Mbps Linux WiFi Adapter for Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Kali, Raspbian, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Zo
I have a lenovo M91p, I run Debian, Linux and Ubuntu, and I run Windows 8.1.
At first I had some concerns because I couldn't find the wifi.
I did contact support through email and I got a fast response telling me
to download the driver or use the disk in the package.
I did not have the disk in hand and found it in a fold of the packaging.
It comes on a 3 inch disk and is rather smallish.
Turns out on Win8.1 you have to install the driver
Installing the driver was fast, easy
after installing the driver the WiFi source was found quickly and after
giving it my pass code, I was connected.
I have not yet tried to get the Linux version operating yet, but it should go as easily as
the Windows version did.
I needed Wi fi on my desk top and this allowed me to have that option.
I do recommend this version, it seems to work well.
